Power drums

Here’s a little something to file under “I did not know that”. It seems that when Will Power isn’t driving like a champion on race courses he likes to unwind by slamming sticks into drumheads and cymbals rhythmically. For real.

From Indycar.com:

Power, the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series champion and two-time Belle Isle winner, began racing in Formula Ford in his native Australia in 2000 and in the Champ Car World Series in late 2005 before joining Penske in 2009 as a fill-in for Helio Castroneves. It was the same year Power first picked up a set of drumsticks.

“I’m no pro (on drums),” Power said humbly. “I really started playing in 2009, when I was a part-time driver. I play a little bit on and off. I’m not that good.”

“I like the style of Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters and Nirvana), Jimmy Chamberlin (The Smashing Pumpkins), Travis Barker (Blink-182) and jazz great Buddy Rich,” said Power. “But I drive a lot better than I play drums.”

Sadly, the article makes no mention of whether or not Power has pictures of Charlie Kimball on his drumheads. Pity.

To the best of my knowledge, I’m not aware of any publicly known musical talents by other drivers. I mean, we know two of them can dance, but can anyone else play instruments or sing? Max Chilton looks kinda like member of One Direction, right? Maybe he can croon. Can we get a house band together, please?

Final Lap: Before you scoff, check out the video. Obviously he’s no Travis Barker, but for a guy who doesn’t play with other musicians he’s not too shabby.

Donald Davidson thinks Max Chilton sounds like Peter Noone. I can kinda hear it, but I don’t have a real need to hear Chilton sing “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter”.
